A Vibrant First Day

Today went really well. After setting up I enjoyed many conversations with such a variety of people, all ages and walks of life.

Welcome to Обменнйы пункт - Exchange Point!

This project builds on previous projects, such as Swap Shots, where I invited members of the public and other artists to contribute to a dialogue between people in St Petersburg and other parts of the world, including Shetland, the northern islands where I live. I also worked with Susan Timmins in 2007 to create a project, Domestic Dialogues, linking people in Shetland and St Petersburg.

In keeping with this year's theme for Dialogi, I am inviting visitors to Dialogi to take part in a conversation about our world today and our place within it. It could be a very small and personal change, such as changing the route you follow to work or school or it could be a monumental idea where you team up with other people or organisations.

Everyone can make as many proposals as they like. I am giving everyone special cards, pens and rubber stamps, and each idea is posted on a special wall in the exhibition. After I leave St Petersburg, I will bind all the ideas together into two books, using the original handmade pages everyone makes. I will also choose one or more of the ideas to develop with other people, including artists, to realise as a concrete project.
